ABOUT THE FORT WORTH PARALEGAL ASSOCIATIONHistory:The FWPA began in 1982. Code of Ethics:All FWPA members, by applying for membership, adopt as a guideline for professional conduct the Code of Ethics and Professional Responsibility of the Paralegal Division of the State Bar of Texas. Definition of Paralegal/Legal Assistant:FWPA, for its purposes, uses the terms "paralegal" and "legal assistant" interchangeably. A legal assistant is a person, qualified through education, training or work experience, who is employed or retained by a lawyer, law office, governmental agency or other entity, in a capacity or function which involves the performance, under the ultimate direction and supervision of an attorney, of specifically delegated substantive legal work, which work, for the most part, requires a sufficient knowledge of legal concepts that, absent such assistant, the attorney would perform the task. Classes of Members:FWPA has six (6) classes of members which include Voting members, Sustaining members, Student members, Associate members, Freelance/Temporary/Independent members, and Patron members.
