("FWPA" or "the Association")

History:

The FWPA began in 1982.

Code of Ethics:

All FWPA members, by applying for membership, adopt as a guideline for professional conduct the Code of Ethics and Professional Responsibility of the Legal Assistant Division of the State Bar of Texas.

Definition of Paralegal/Legal Assistant:

FWPA, for its purposes, uses the terms "paralegal" and "legal assistant" interchangeably. A legal assistant is a person, qualified through education, training or work experience, who is employed or retained by a lawyer, law office, governmental agency or other entity, in a capacity or function which involves the performance, under the ultimate direction and supervision of an attorney, of specifically delegated substantive legal work, which work, for the most part, requires a sufficient knowledge of legal concepts that, absent such assistant, the attorney would perform the task.

Classes of Members:

FWPA has six (6) classes of members which include Voting members, Sustaining members, Student members, Associate members, Freelance/Temporary/Independent members, and Patron members. Please contact our Membership Chair for information concerning requirements for membership in the Association.
