ABOUT THE FORT WORTH PARALEGAL ASSOCIATION

History:

The FWPA began in 1982.

Code of Ethics:

All FWPA members, by applying for membership, adopt as a guideline for professional conduct the Code of Ethics and Professional Responsibility of the Paralegal Division of the State Bar of Texas.

Definition of Paralegal/Legal Assistant:

FWPA, for its purposes, uses the terms "paralegal" and "legal assistant" interchangeably. A legal assistant is a person, qualified through education, training or work experience, who is employed or retained by a lawyer, law office, governmental agency or other entity, in a capacity or function which involves the performance, under the ultimate direction and supervision of an attorney, of specifically delegated substantive legal work, which work, for the most part, requires a sufficient knowledge of legal concepts that, absent such assistant, the attorney would perform the task.

Classes of Members:

FWPA has seven (7) classes of members which include Voting Members, Freelance Members, Sustaining Members, Emeritus Members, Student Members, Associate Members, and Patron Members. Please contact our Membership Chair for information concerning requirements for membership in the Association.
